Starting Pitchers

Below are our rankings of starting pitchers entering the 2017 season.  The list was last updated on March 3rd, 2017.

The Super Elite

1.

Clayton Kershaw (LAD) The best pitcher in the league, but if you’re drafting in the top of the first round, do you take him?

2.

Madison Bumgarner (SFG) Continues to be a solid anchor for your staff

3.

Max Scherzer (WAS) His finger is starting to worry us, but if he drops, you have to jump on him

4.

Noah Syndergaard (NYM) He has everything in his quiver to become a CY Young winner

The Elite

5.

Chris Sale (BOS) The delivery continues to defy the odds but until he gets hurt, he’s one of the best there is

6.

Yu Darvish (TEX) Now two years removed from TJ Surgery, he should be good to go for 180 to 200 innings

7.

Corey Kluber (CLE) Will all the innings he pitched in the playoffs catch up to him?  We think not

8.

Johnny Cueto (SFG) The park should continue to make Cueto one of the best pitchers in the game

Pretty Darn Good

9.

Jake Arrieta (CHC) He had some stumbles in the second half last year but came back strong in the playoffs

10.

Stephen Strasburg (WAS) If he can stay out of the trainers room for the year, he could easily be a top five pitcher. We are betting the under

11.

Justin Verlander (DET) He learned to be a pitcher and is nearly back to performer like the 2011 Verlander

12.

David Price (BOS) A visit to Dr. Andrews is never a good thing.  You have to let him drop until we know more

13.

Chris Archer (TAM) Last year was tough, but we are betting on a bounce back

14.

Jacob DeGrom (NYM) Was part of the walking wounded in Mets-Land last year.  We expect him to be better

15.

Jon Lester (CHC) No David Ross, but that shouldn’t matter.

16.

Carlos Carrasco (CLE) Would things have ended different in October if he would have pitched?

17.

Cole Hamels (TEX) He’s older and a little boring…but we would take him on any team as our #2 pitcher

18.

Jose Quintana (CWS) He finally won more than nine games last year.  Expect that to continue, particularly if he changes addresses

19.

Carlos Martinez (STL) The delivery is violent but the stuff is elite.  He could easily out-earn his ADP

20.

Aaron Sanchez (TOR) Broke out last season and the growth should continue this year

21.

Masahiro Tanaka (NYY) He’s a risky pick as your number two but if he stays healthy, he could return great value

22.

Kenta Maeda (LAD) A strikeout an inning and a 2.5 walk per nine shows that he’s the real deal

23.

Kyle Hendricks (CHC) An 88 MPH fastball gives little room for error.  He didn’t make many last year.  Will he this year?

24.

Julio Teheran (ATL) The Braves are better so expect more than seven wins this season

25.

Danny Duffy (KC) Ignore September when he was worn out and focus on the other months. Potential breakout candidate

26.

Rick Porcello (BOS) He might have won the CY Young, but Verlander still wins with Kate Upton

The Strong Middle Tier

27.

Gerrit Cole (PIT) We love the arm but there are warning signs with this health

28.

Zack Greinke (ARZ) Arizona was not good to him last year. A 4.12 FIP says it might not get much better

29.

Michael Fulmer (DET) A .268 BABIP indicates there will be some correction, so think a 3.60 ERA instead of a 3.00 ERA

30.

Felix Hernandez (SEA) Can he pull a Verlander?  The stuff says no, but you can’t completely rule that out

31.

Tanner Roark (WAS) His FIP says a correction is coming.  Watch out and don’t overbid

32.

Rich Hill (LAD) Count on 20 really good starts…nothing more

33.

Danny Salazar (CLE) Was money in the second half…it could continue

34.

Kevin Gausman (BAL) An .812 OPS against lefties indicates his curve still needs work.  There’s still a lot to like

35.

Steven Matz (NYM) It’s about health with Matz.  The stuff and command are there

36.

Jameson Taillon (PIT) The handcuffs should finally come off with a chance to soar into the upper-echelon of pitching

37.

Matt Harvey (NYM) We thought his problems last year were injury-related.  Now we know.  He could have a big bounce back

38.

Sean Manaea (OAK) Lefties can’t hit him but righties can.  He’s still learning but when it comes together, it could be special

39.

Dallas Keuchel (HOU) As a 2016 Keuchel owner, I’m bitter.  I have nothing further to say

40.

Garrett Richards (LAA) A medical miracle?  He dodged TJ Surgery…for now.  Assuming healthy, he’ll out earn his ADP

Marcus Stroman (TOR)

Risk and Reward
