Third Base

Below are our rankings of third basemen entering the 2017 season.  The list was last updated on January 30, 2017.

The Elite

1.

Kris Bryant (CHC, OF elig) What does he do for an encore?  45 HRs?  50???

2.

Nolan Arenado (COL) Will give Bryant a run for his money.  He’s that good.

3.

Josh Donaldson (TOR) He’s the old man of the “Elites”, but the awesome production should last at least one more year.

4.

Manny Machado (BAL, SS elig) Buck Showalter is saving his legs for the playoffs.

Pretty Darn Good

5.

Kyle Seager (SEA) Over the past three seasons, Seager has averaged 27 homers and 90 RBI. Safe, boring, and very solid.

6.

Todd Frazier (CWS) It’s easy to remember the 40 homers and the .225 BA, but don’t forget about those 15 stolen bases.

7.

Adrian Beltre (TEX) Last year was another great season on his march to the HOF. Just don’t rub him the wrong way.

8.

Anthony Rendon (WAS) He may not be what we once thought he’d be, but that’s still not all that bad.

9.

Evan Longoria (TAM) After the 22 homer campaign in 2014 and 21 homers in 2015, who saw the career-best 36 bombs in 2016?

10.

Jose Ramirez (CLE) A 100 point BABIP improvement will add, well a 100 points to your batting average.  Expect some BA regression but overall, he should be solid.

11.

Matt Carpenter (STL, 1B/2B elig) The position flexibility is huge. The production only middling.

The Middle Tier

12.

Alex Bregman (HOU) This will be the last year that he will be drafted outside of the first five rounds.

13.

Eduardo Nunez (SF, SS elig) Can he duplicate his amazing 2016 career season? No, but I’ll settle with 10 homers and 30 thefts and be very happy.

14.

Justin Turner (LAD) Is the 27, 90 an outlier?  Probably…think more 22, 75 and you’ll be just fine.

15.

Maikel Franco (PHI) How can a 24 homer, 88 RBI season from a 24-year-old be seen as disappointing?

16.

Miguel Sano (MIN, OF elig) The home run potential is huge. Can he hit enough of them to make you forget about the potential abysmal BA?

17.

Jake Lamb (ARZ) A 20 HR, 61 RBI, .291 BA first half was followed up by a 9 HR, 30 RBI, .197 BA in the second half. Brandon Drury is not very far away should we witness a repeat of that 2016 second half.

18.

Nick Castellanos (DET) Was having his breakout when he broke his hand.  Expect some natural power regression in the first half but after that, watch out.  He likely won’t be at #18 next year.

19.

Mike Moustakas (KC) He broke out in 2015 and broke apart in 2016. If the knee is 100%, “Moose” could provide some great numbers at a discounted price in what will most likely be his final year in KC.

20.

Yangervis Solarte (SD) Quietly, Solarte had a very good 2016, and could prove to be a solid bargain relative to his draft slot in 2017.

21.

Javier Baez (CHC, 2B/SS elig) Find the kid some at-bats. Just find him the at-bats….

22.

Yulieski Gurriel (HOU) He won’t be getting any Christmas cards from A.J. Reed in the next couple of years.

23.

Jung-ho Kang (PIT) Get him a chauffeur, and quick.

The Best of the Rest

24.

Ryon Healy (OAK) 13 homers in 269 at-bats is intriguing. The fact that he could be sharing time with Yonder Alonso at 1B is not so intriguing.

25.

Hernan Perez (MIL, OF elig) Slugged 13 homers and stole 34 bases in 2016. He then added a Gold Glove and a Venezuelan Caribbean League batting title over the winter, and he doesn’t have a full-time job with the Brewers heading into 2017.

26.

Eugenio Suarez (CIN) He improved on his strikeouts rates in the second half, which is a good thing. The bad news is he still struck out 155 times.

27.

Pablo Sandoval (BOS) This could be a first for Sandoval in that he might actually be reporting to camp in the best shape of his life.

28.

Chase Headley (NYY) In a year that saw virtually everyone hit 20 homers, Headley hit 14.

29.

Matt Duffy (TAM) If you had the forsythe to grab him late in those early NFBC Drafts, you could wind up a very happy camper.

30.

Travis Shaw (MIL, 1B elig) Shaw is the reason that Hernan Perez is the Brew Crew’s designated super-sub. It’s not a good enough reason.

31.

Martin Prado (MIA) The power is light, speed non-existent, but he’ll play full-time and provide value in deeper formats with his RBI and OBP numbers.

32.

Jose Reyes (NYM) One final year and Reyes will be off the books. In the meantime, the at-bats will be coming from 3B.

33.

Trevor Plouffe (OAK)

34.

Yoan Moncado (CWS)

35.

Danny Valencia (SEA, OF elig)

36.

Adonis Garcia (ATL)

37.

Luis Valbuena (LAA)

38.

Jhonny Peralta (STL)

39.

David Wright (NYM)

40.

Yunel Escobar (LAA)

41.

David Freese (PIT)

42.

Jurickson Profar (TEX)

43.

Jae-gyun Hwang (SF)

44.

Cheslor Cuthbert (KC)

45.

Wilmer Flores (NYM, 1B elig)

46.

Kaleb Cowart (LAA)

47.

Matt Chapman (OAK)

48.

Greg Garcia (STL, SS/2B elig)

49.

Conor Gillaspie (SF)

50.

Andrew Romine (DET, 1B/OF elig)

51.

Andres Blanco (PHI, 2B elig)

52.

Tommy La Stella (CHC)

53.

Ryan Flaherty (BAL)

54.

Ronald Torreyes (NYY)

55.

JaCoby Jones (DET)

56.

Matt Skole (WAS)

57.

Aaron Hill (FA, 2B elig)

58.

Adam Rosales (OAK, 2B elig)

59.

Jeimer Candelario (CHC)

60.

Josh Rutledge (BOS)

61.

Matt Dominguez (BOS)

62

Brett Wallace (SD)
