  1. Rich, love the pod. In a 16 team H2H dynasty league. Have to keep 12 each year. On offense, we start 3 OFs and a utility (any position) in addition to the infield spots. No CI or MI

    Keeping
Hitters- lucroy, pujols, betts (has 2b/OF eligibility), tulo, machado, kemp, cargo, braun
Pitchers – H Bailey, Felix, Cashner

Last choice – Neil Walker or Shelby Miller. So I could move Betts to utility if I kept Walker. It also gives me another OF to plug in if an OF gets injured.

And if you get a minute for a 2nd question, I traded tyson ross, joc pederson, and gardner to acquire pujols. Too much? I figured I had excess to trade and wanted to go all in for this year.

    Thanks,
    Brian

  2. In a dynasty league would you trade Joc Pederson for Carlos Martinez, Vincent Velazquez and Orlando Arcia?

  3. Hey Rich,

Just started listening to the show and have really enjoyed it so far. My question is a keeper question as i’m having a hard time about who to keep. Its a 14 teams H2H point league. We get to keep 3 players at their previous years auction price. Any help would be appreciated as i keep going back and forth on these players. The players are:

    George Springer-$1
    Christian Yelich-$3
    Kole Calhoun-$1
    Nelson Cruz-$12
    Alex Wood-$6
    Jacob Degroom-$10
    Yordano Ventura-$1

Thank you Rich and keep up the great work

  4. What are your thoughts on trading multiple touted prospects for established stars? I joined a dynasty league three years ago (46 man rosters, 5×5 20 MiLB) and took over a terrible roster. Now I have plenty of young names (Buxton, Correra, Bradley) but I feel like I am 1-2 stars away from contending. Kershaw just went on the block and I am offering Correra, Tapia and Bradley for him, Puig may be able to be had, but it would most likely cost me Polanco and maybe even Buxton.

I feel like I should be aggressive in targeting these stars, but I don’t want sell my prospects short.

    What’s your philosophy?

    • Build a ton of prospects like you have and flip some of them for the win. You are doing the right thing. Your trade of Kershaw is very rich and I would like to see just Correa and Bradley. Puig…I’d rather have Polanco and Buxton. Buxton and Correa are elite and you’ve got to get a no-brainer elite major leaguer back. Kershaw is that but not Puig.

  5. Hey Rich,

What do you see having the better side in long term value in this trade?

    Kyle Seager & Taijuan Walker

    For

    Nolan Arenado & David Dahl

I do need pitching and I have OF, but I love the upside of Dahl and I like Arenado a little more than Seager, even though it’s close. I don’t have the faith in Walker most seem to do. What do you think?

  6. Rich, great work here at 361. Love the content and all the information. One of the better sites on the interweb!

I have a fantasy question for you. In a dynasty league, would you trade Starling Marte or Gregory Polanco for a 2016 1st round pick (likely to be the worst team in the league, so should be #1 overall or at minimum, top 3. Would give me a great chance at getting Moncada since Yahoo doesn’t have him in their system yet) and one of Appel, J. Gray, or Bradley? I’m hesitant even if it’s Moncada because I’m not a fan of pitching prospects, plus Marte had a monster 2nd half, leading me to believe he has 20/40 upside. And with Polanco, he’s already in the MLB and if I were to do the trade, I’d have to wait until 2016/2017 for Moncada to reach the majors. I need pitching, but I’m not convinced pitching prospects are the way to go. My team’s in rebuild mode with a ton of top hitting prospects.

So in short, Polanco OR Marte for one of Appel, Bradley, or J. Gray plus possibly the top pick in the 2016 draft, which could turn out to be Moncada. From a pure value standpoint, would you do it? I’m thinking of holding out to see if he offers Sano and that pick for Marte because frankly, the pitching prospects don’t interest me even if I need pitching. I doubt he’ll give up Sano, but I just feel the pitching prospect and the pick is not enough for me to pull the trigger. What do you think Rich?

    • Forgot to mention Rich. I also own two of the other worst teams’ 1st round picks in 2016, so if I get this one, it would practically be a lock that one of those picks ends up being Moncada. Not sure that changes anything, but figured I’d mention it.

    • Thanks for the kind words. I would hang tight with both Polanco and Marte. Marte is already a major contributor and Polanco is about to become that. Moncada has the look and the early success in Cuba, but both of those guys are in the big leagues. The top pitcher along is enticing, but I would hold tight.

  7. Couple of questions,

    I’m in a 10 team 6×6 (OPS & holds) dynasty league.

For dynasty, would you rather have Shelby Miller, or Noah Syndergaard? I would only start either of them this year in an absolute emergency, so mainly for longterm worth.

Second, what do you think of Jacob Lindgren’s worth in a holds league? I’m a Mississippi State alum, so I’ll probably pick him up just for the hell of it.

    • Syndergaard has more upside and if you don’t care about this year, I’d go there. Plus, we don’t know what the Braves new ballpark will bring.

Holds is the hardest thing to predict but I like Lingren’s arm, so I would think there would be holds.

  8. Rich,

As always, thanks in advance for everything you do.

Keeper league, 5X5 with OPS instead of average, $325 budget. As a frame of reference, most of the batting studs go for $35-45 in the auction and the pitching studs from $30-35 in the auction.

Long story short, my team is short a closer or two heading into the season (I am contending this year) and I have Jose Fernandez on the shelf until midseason so I could use another pitcher to rely on.

    Thoughts on:

    Giving Jose Bautista ($21)

Getting Marcus Stroman ($5) and Rodney ($13).

Everything that has been written about Stroman over this off season has been overwhelming positive it seems and this would be my chance to jump on him at a minimum price before he potentially breaks out and could be a keeper pitcher on my team for many years.

On the surface I think it looks a little risky, especially dealing a big affordable hitter for those two guys, however bc of other circumstances I will not bore you with, trading Bautista will open up money to fill my only two holes heading into the draft, catcher (I would get Posey) and MI (I would get a $10 player). It would also allow me to play Steven Souza full time instead of having to bench him bc giving up Bautista opens a full time OF slot.

This would then make the trade something like:

Bautista for Stroman, Rodney, Posey, (Schoop?), and allowing to play Souza all season.

Sorry for the long message, but thanks so much as always, Rich!!!

    • The deal straight-up is bad, however, if you can get Posey and Schoop and play Souza all year long. Yelp, I woudl do that. Just be warned that Rodney is just not reliable. Could implode at any moment. Like Stroman a lot.

  9. have an offer on the table to obtain Trout…I’m in a 6X6 10 man H2H obp league…Im giving up his choice between corey seager or addison russell plus Andrew Cashner plus his choice between Alex Gordon or Matt Holiday…am I giving up too much?

    • It’s a lot for Trout but if you’re able to keep either Russell or Seager, you’re trading from depth and strength and that’s why you collect these guys…yelp…close your eyes and hit accept and enjoy Trout.

  10. Love the podcast. I drive a lot for work, so I pick random episodes and re-listen throughout each work week while I’m out on the road. Very informative stuff. Keep up the good work!

    Anyway, my question is this…

Do the Pirates go with Alvarez at 1st base this season, all season, or do they take a chance (like they are doing with Kang at SS) and give Josh Bell a shot instead?

    Thanks Rich!

  11. What catcher would you rather have in a standard 5×5 dynasty league:

    Mike Zunino or Matt Wieters.

Thank You. I have both catchers, and I want to see which one I should look to trade.

  12. Hey Rich!

It’s keeper decision time… The way my league works is we get to keep 5 players that were originally drafted in our top 20 picks and 6 from a pool of players consisting of low draft picks, free agent aquisitions and minor league call ups (We also get to stash 5 MiLB guys)…

So here’s my upper tier guys I’m choosing from and where my head currently is:

    1. Paul Goldschmidt
    2. Robinson Cano
    3. Ian Desmond
    4. Zack Greinke
    5. Tyson Ross
    5A. Yordano Ventura
    5B. Joey Votto
    5C. Evan Gattis

My top 4 are pretty much locks, but I’m really torn on who to keep out of the Ross, Ventura, Votto, Gattis pool… Thoughts?

And here’s where it gets really tough! Here’s my bottom 6 options:

    1. Anthony Rendon
    2. Greg Holland
    3. Devin Mesoraco
    4. Xander Bogaerts
    5. Chris Carter
    6. Delin Baetances
    6A. Jacob DeGrom
    6B. Marcus Stroman
    6C. Michael Wacha
    6D. David Wright
    6E. Lucas Duda

I really hate dropping those young arms, but I figure Starting Pitching is about the deepest pool of players there is… as information there are no yearly limitations on keepers (we can keep them as long as we like) however I will eventually have to rotate guys out of my bottom 6, as I start to add my minor league guys into the mix.

Here’s the guys I currently have rostered in my minors:

    1. Gregory Polanco
    2. Mookie Betts
    3. Miguel Sano
    4. Arismendy Alcantra
    5. J.P. Crawford

We can hold these guys in our minors as long as we want, but once we add them to our MLB rosters they become part of our bottom 6 pool.

Sorry about the book, but it’s a complex league and I wanted you to have all the facts! 🙂

Thanks for taking a look and keep up the great work!!

    Sean

  13. Hey Rich

14 team 6×6 Roto 25 ML 20 MiL (Standard + Holds and OPS)
    C,1B,2B,3B,SS,MI,CI,OFx4 UTIL, SPx3 RPx3 Px4

Semi long question so I understand if you can’t get to it

I took over a crap team, dumped my older players invested heavy into youth and prospects, not sure where I stand at this point in the future, I think I have a top 3 team in few years but idk if my pitching is strong enough and I need to go after a SS. Here’s what I have so far, a lot of my ML players were picked up in hopes of a bounce back/break through I only expect about a 20% return on the high risk ML guys:

    C – ML – M. Montero, Y. Grandal
    MiL – A. Hedges, M. Pentecost

    1B – ML – A. Gonzalez, J. Singleton
    MiL – C.Walker,

    2B – ML – R.Cano, N. Franklin
    MiL – J. Profar

    3B – ML – N. Arenado
    MiL – D.J. Peterson

    SS – ML – A. Escobar

    OF – ML – C. Yelich, A. Garcia, M. Saunders, D. Pompey
MiL – A. Meadows, L. Brinson, D. Dahl, J. Pederson (will probably promote early)

SP – ML – Leake, Keuchel, Holland, W. Peralta, Gibson, Archer, Bailey, Hahn
    MiL – E. Romero, A. Vizcaino, P. Johnson. J. Berrios, A. Websters, J. Long, J. Gray, A. Reyes, J. Thompson (TEX), V. Velasquez

    RP – ML – A. Warren, J. Walden, N. Ramirez
    MiL – RJ Alvarez

I have no closer but I am hoping Ramirez and Alvarez fall into those roles in the next year or two. I cut nearly ever RP I have as they are a dime a dozen so I could essentially do futures tryouts for my SP and hopeful bounce back players (Franklin, Garcia, Saunders)

I in no way plan to win in the next 2 years or so but the only glaring problems I see are SS and maybe SP, but I wanted a second opinion in case I am missing something so I can make my moves now.

I may make a move for Turner, same owner got Lindor but I don’t want to give up the farm for him.

  14. Hey Rich, I’m in a 20 team dynasty 8×8 (TB, K, BB and G, QS, HD extra) where we keep our entire roster each season. After 3 consecutive seasons finishing 8-10th with an aging team, I think it’s time for a rebuild. I am reasonably confident that I could Springer and Matt Adams for Pujols and Lucroy (I have Swihart in the wings). Is that a good place to start my rebuild? Pujols and Lucroy are two of my major trade chips I can use in a rebuild so I want to get as much out of them as possible. Thanks for any help, keep up the good work!

    • I tried to get Buxton with Pujols and the owner almost did it, but declined in the end. Pujols is what 35 and on the back-side of his career. Yeah, getting Springer would be great. Matt Adams for Lucroy…I would want more I think. You could go Springer and a couple of younger high upside kids. That said, it’s not a bad trade for you, but would definitely shop it since they are your best trade chips.

  15. I’m in a 6×6 obp league….I want to add peraza. ..what is realistic from him in his rookie year?

    • A ton of speed…assuming he gets 450-500 plate appearances, he could still 30-40 bases. No power and at least a .260-.270 average. He can really hit though, so there is upside in the BA and OBP, but he’s a rookie and you need to check your expectations just a bit in his rookie year. The bigger question is will he get playing time in 2015? He could but it’s far from certain. Perhaps a 2nd half call-up and if so, cut the SBs in half.

  16. Hi Rich, I was wondering which website you felt (or heard) was the best for a dynasty league? Right now we use ESPN but have gotten tired of the elite prospects being left out of the player pool. Thanks!

    • I would not recommend ESPN as they didn’t even have Mookie Betts until he played a week in the majors. We use CBS for all of our Dynasty Leagues and although it cost $150 per year, they have a ton of players and the ability to manually add players not in their database. If the price is too much, then I’ve heard FoxSports is good. No first hand knowledge though.

  17. How would you rank betts, polanco and yelich?

Would you deal yelich for polanco?

    • Upside is Polanco, Yelich, and Betts; so in three years, that’s how I would think they land. If you are risk adverse, it’s Yelich before Polanco. They are all elite with huge upside. It’s hard to go too wrong with any of them

  18. Rich,

I have the 1st pick in our dynasty re-draft, and assuming he signs, I plan to pick Moncada. Our draft is not until mid March. I am getting offers for the pick though including from the guy who has the second pick which would be Castillo. I am probably not quite contending yet this year and I am pretty set in the OF anyway with Puig, Heyward, Yelich, and Pompey in the majors and Dahl, Margot, Tapia, and Michael Taylor in the minors. I also have a lot of good SS prospects already too in Correa, Crawford, Lindor, and Barreto. I know some of these guys including Moncada might move off SS anyway. So my question is, should I consider trading Moncada at all or is he too valuable and, if so, what kind of player would equal the difference between Moncada and Castillo? And what is Moncada worth straight up? I know that is a vague question, but I am just trying to get a handle on his value. The league is 16 team 7×7 with TB and OBP added and 20 man minors rosters. Thanks for the help.

    • I would not trade the 1st pick, particulary with your draft in mid-March as he’ll likely sign around March 1st. He’s a top 20 prospect easy, maybe more. Given the hype, he should demand a Top 10 offensive prospect, which you have many of them already – Correa or Seager type of player. Otherwise, I’d hold onto him, his value is only going to go up. Enjoy.

  19. Hi Rich,
My Husband and I love your Podcast, you and Tim are great .
I need some help with a keeper league.

    16 team H2H league and I keep 4 plus 1 NA prospect

    Buxton is my prospect

    Paul Goldschmidt
    Ian Desmond
    Joey Voto
    Brian Dozier
    Bumgarner
    Jordan Zimmermann
    Jeff Samardzija

I really dont know what to do about Voto.

What 4 should I keep? any Input ?

  20. Is Alcantara’s ceiling still a first division 20/20 guy or is his contact rate going to catch up to him? What is your prediction for 2015 for him? Someone dropped him in our league and wondering about putting in a bid for him during our auction this year. Also, I haven’t mentioned it before, but this site has quickly become my go-to for prospect and fantasy baseball advice. Thank you for all your hard work!

    • Still like him. He’s never had great contact rate but he’s better than what he showed in 2014. If he can have a 75% contact, it will allow his power and speed to play. Still very young and he’ll get his chance in 2015.

  21. 16 team dynasty, 40 man rosters w/minors, 12×8 weighted roto.
I’m trying to move McHugh. I could really use some bench depth, draft picks and a reduction in team salary.

McHugh is @ $2500 and expires this yr.

One GM has offered LaRoche (3ytd @1k – lge min) and either Ian Clarkin (3@1k)or Lance McCullers (3@1k) for McHugh. This would SAVE me $1500.

Another GM has offered Kyle Gibson (3@1k), Pablo Sandoval (1@7k), his 2nd and 3rd rounders for McHugh and Steve Pearce (1@3k). This would increase my salary $1500.
He also offered Chris Taylor (1@3k), Pablo, Alex Rios (1@5k), 2nd and 3rd rnd picks for McHugh, Pearce and Austin Jackson (1@10k). This would save me $3500.

Which (if any) do you like best? Thoughts on some of the players involved? thanks for any/all input

  22. What side do you prefer?

    I trade:

Edward Mujica (4M Contract, FA in 2016…So somewhat overpayed)
3rd Round AMAT Draft Pick (28 Team League, will probably be about #70 overall, all players drafted in the 2015 MLB AMAT Draft will be eligible).

    He Trades:

Brian Wilson (1.5M, Player Option in 2015 which will get accepted for sure, so FA in 2016… pretty much dead money)
Asher Wojciechowski (80,000…will receive about 500K when I call him up to my A25–currently on my 40 man…not in my farm–roster, will have 6 years of team control)
Nick Delmonico (He is still suspended for a bit I believe)
    Trey Mancini

I know this might be tough given the fact that there is very limited info on the league, but minor league spots are not an issue (270 per team, I have only filled about 215 of my spots). I have weak SPs, (Hisashi Iwakuma, Travis Wood, Wei-Yen Chen, Drew Smyly, Charlie Morton), yet a decent bullpen. I am the Pittsburg Pirates, so I am in the bottom half cap space wise (About 82M) and I only have 3M in free money before this trade. Edward Mujica is currently demoted to AAAA but still has a shuttle left, so he doesn’t currently take up a roster spot on the A25. Wilson was also just outrighted to AAAA so he doesn’t take up a roster spot on my 40 Man or A25, but I still have to pay for him. Also, I put Mujica through ReVocable Wire and no one put in a claim for him, so I don’t know why there is such a lack of interest for him. Would Mujica or Tazawa get save opportunities if Koji went down with injury?

Sorry for some of the excess information that may be irrelevant, but I wanted you to know as much as possible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • Hmm…none of the guys you are getting back will provide much value and Eddie M. could pick up a save or two if and when Koji gets hurt. He was pretty healthy last year, but I would not count on it year-over-year.

I’m not sure I have much else to contribute to this…I apologize as your rules appear to be quite complicated. Rules aside, Mujica is the best player in the lot and the only one that could provide value. Maybe Wojo could be a swing guy…maybe. If the trade gives you some budget relief, you should consider, otherwise, I would stick with what I have.

  23. Hi Rich….. I just completed my Re Draft….. Im in a 15 team Dynasty league w/15 minor league slots…. I drafted 10th overall. Id like your opinion as to how I did.

    Here are my picks
    1 Jeff Hoffman
    2 Joaquin Benoit
    3 Michael Chavis
    4 Michael Feliz
    5 Eddie Butler
    6 Monte Harrison

    Thanks

  24. Hey Rich, in a 30 team league would you trade Joc Pederson and David Dahl for Mookie Betts and Hunter Dozier? I currently have Trout in center and i am searching for a right fielder, I still have free agency left to get one as well.

  25. Rich,

First off, thanks for this site and the Podcast, I enjoy them both. I’m in a real pickle as to what to do this year with Tanner Roark. I can keep him on two teams and he’d only cost me a 32nd round pick in one and a 31st pick on the other. Sounds like a no brainer, but I only get to keep 8 and keeping him would cost me someone like Jose Quintana in the 18th round or Andrew Cashner in the 8th. If the Scherzer move wasn’t made I wouldn’t hesitate, but I don’t want to keep a guy who could be stuck in the bullpen all season. Any advice?

    • Well, Tanner Roark doesn’t have a job and Cashner and Quintana do. Cashner is constantly hurt and while I like him, he’s an 11th round pick and over valued in the 8th round. There’s more value in Quintana. Hopefully you can wait a little bit until we know what happens in Washington.

  26. Hi Rich,
I’m looking to choose one of several prospects in a deal I’m looking to make (you very recently replied to a FB post of mine with links to your player articles…thanks!)
How would you rank them? Is it close?
    McCullers
    Clarkin
    Toescar Hernandez

    Thanks!

  27. Hi Rich,

Great show. Can you please explain the best strategy for autodrafting a team (on CBS)? My league has set its draft for a time when I will be out of the country and I don’t want to miss playing in the league this year just because I can’t draft my team live (like others in my league have chosen to do). Is an autodraft always likely to be inferior to drafting live because not able to tailor the draft selections to the particular circumstances of the draft such that drafting a competitive team is very difficult and unlikely? And is there a way to practice autodrafting with mock drafts?

This is a standard, mixed roto league of about 14 teams – the usual 5×5 roto stats, 1 catcher, 2 extra infielders and 5 outfielders – and the usual snake draft.

From what I understand (from the limited information I could find on the CBS site), the autodraft basically just drafts whoever I put in my queue in the order I have them and if no one is in my cue, then the best available player in the current draft ranking for the league will be selected assuming that position is open on my team? So in order to avoid selecting a pitcher for the first 2-3 rounds, I have to list the pitchers in my queue after the 28th player or after the 42nd player and so forth? And how is it possible to control which player I select in which round and to avoid picking a player I want later from being drafted too early? It’s not possible to select which player I want to avoid, or avoid before a certain round, right? Maybe these are the drawbacks of autodrafting v. live drafting which is why people don’t want to play in a league in which they can’t draft live?

    Any other advice for autodrafting?

    • Hi Alex, I know you spent a lot of time writing this but I’m not sure how to help you. I just don’t autodraft. I’ve seen it done somewhat succesfully on ESPN where I think you can put some logic into the process, but if all CBS allows you to do is set draft order, you could get 4 2B’s and before you get a pitcher as it will probably do bench next.

Suggestion…go out to our facebook page and post the question as there might be people who have done this before and can give you some advice. Here’s the link…https://www.facebook.com/groups/Prospect361/?fref=nf

Also, is there nobody you can get to draft for you? I once had a similar situation and had my wife draft for me with some very specific directions. The draft worked out quite well. She’s a fantasy football player so understood the concepts but isn’t s a baseball geek and it still was probably better than letting the computer do it for me.

      Sorry, I can’t be of more help…

  28. Just asking anyone who reads this to answer. After ESPN is done with their maintence, what prospects do you believe will be added to the database? There are tons of top 100 prospects not available to be picked up or drafted. Thanks!

    • It’s ESPN, so it’s hard to say. It’s anyone’s guess. Hopefully they’ll at least add Keith Law’s top-100 lol. And MLB.com, BA, BP, etc… Maybe even Rich’s list! 🙂

      • It’s killing me not being able to take prospects such as Devers, Glasnow, Judge, Peterson. I know they add them based on whether they think they will have a legit chance to make 25 man roster, so i assume that must include guys like Peterson. I actually made a document of about 150 prospects that are from top 100 to guys that are potential break outs that are just not in the ESPN database. It’s that big of a problem in dynasty leagues in my opinion

  29. Rich,

I commited to a full rebuilding project in an RC27 league but I’m losing patience after holding on to Buxton for a full year (and Machado for 2). I only have 4 keeper spots in a 16 league team and I’m way behind in offense. I need a top 15 offensive player for the next 4-5 years and wonder which 2 of these will provide the best chances?

    Manny Machado
    Javier Baez
    Byron Buxton
    Eric Hosmer
    Albert Puljos
    Victor Martinez

Speed counts for very little in this format…

    Thanks
    Loyal listener/reader

    • Hang tight and you will be rewarded with Buxton. I kind of feel the same way with Machado and would prefer him over your other choices. The only exception is Hosmer, but he’ll have to get out of KC, which could happen.

  30. Hey Rich,

    How are you today?

    I am in a 14 team 6×6 dynasty league, 20 ML 25MiL

I am stacked at OF in MiL and have Steven Moya to trade. I am hurting pretty bad at pitching, recently acquired Jon Gray, but he’s about all I have. Looking at trading Moya for Jesse Hahn. Your thoughts? Stats looked really solid for Hahn but I don’t know a lot about him.

    Thank you!

  31. I’m doing a first time 12 team salary league. 50 players 25 bigs 25 minors (which can be on MLB roster) call ups weekly. One at each position two utility and 10 pitcher flex (starters or closers.)

My question is….how much do you think a guy like Trout is worth in a league like this? (Per year) Basically I’m trying to see values of guys with this amount to spend on my team.

I’m going to go after all top 5-10 starters on offense at each position and then spend minimal money on bench minor league players that have high upside. I’m definately going after Bryant and Russel as a Cubs fan though and Rodon probably only top prospects. The rest I’ll have to dig deep on trying to get them guys that aren’t top 100 but will be next year.

I’m really going to try for Arenado, Mesaraco or Perez, Altuve, Rizzo, Castro, and OF Polanco, Soler, and I like Souza, Eaton etc. Of course I’ll go after Joey Bats, Beltre etc if needed but trying to get the younger guys at positions that may produced a bit less but I won’t have to worry about in near future. FYI 6 year max deals.

    • I want to go after offense, and I feel I can get middle of the pack SP or closers cheaper and still win the league. If I have 10 P starting I can have some as callups in minors and play matchups and two start pitchers. Of course I’ll go after a few guys like Sale, Hamels etc just depends how draft goes.

      • I agree, go offense and don’t spend a ton on pitching, they will be available to you late in the draft just like in a redraft league.

I like my offense love my prospects and only half of my pitching staff which is below average. I will trade some bats for a pitcher when prospects are up. Start 10 P weekly I can play two start pitchers for now at bottom of rotation. I still have two guys to add.

      • That’s quite an offense…WOW…yeah, you need some pitching but should be able to move some bats for arms. Is there a specific question or just…how’s my team. If it’s that, it’s good…again, you’ll need to add some arms at some point to match the offense. LOVE your prospects.

    • WOW…tough question on Trout. I’m guessing, he’ll go for $40 plus and then have some type of accelerator based on your salary increases. He’s going to be a tough guy to own in a league like this.

In general in a 12-team league, you go for stars but in a Dynasty League, you are best served by spending wildly on 25-year olds who have yet to hit their peak. Rizzo, Altuve (well, he might have hit his peak), Polanco, etc… While those guys might not ever be Trout, the money you save will likely together with the player you select instead be profitable. Avoid older guys, particulary expensive older guys like Pujols. Just not worth it.

Again, think 25 year olds for the guys you really spend money on. Jason Heyward might be a really nice buy in this format as his value is likely to be depressed.

  32. Hi Rich,
I have a bit of a dilemma that I was hoping you would be able to help me with. I’m in a 5×5 11 team mixed keeper league where we can keep up to 4 players while giving up their draft round. This year we switch over from wins to quality starts. My plan is to definitely keep Puig (13) and Harper (11th). Other than these two I can select two of the following: Harvey (18), Hamels (7), Betts (15), Ellsbury (3), Lee (15) or Polaco (15). Who would you keep? Also, I may be able to move Hamels and Ellsbury for Donaldson (13). Should I pursue this first and foremost?
    Thanks for the advice!
    Ben
P.S. the longer the podcast the better. Don’t cave in to the pressure to keep it at an hour!

    • Hey Ben. Harvey is a gamble and I would be tempted to keep him in the 18th round…too good of value. Then for me it’s either Betts or Polanco. Both have great upside but I would lean towards Polanco. If you do the trade, yeah, keeping Donaldson as my fourth is the smart and safe play, but Polanco could be a beast.

Conclusion: if you want to play it safe, do the trade and keep Donaldson.

    • BTW, I will discuss your question with Tim tomorrow.

  33. Where would you rank Steven Souza in a dynasty redraft? AM I crazy to take him #3 ahead of Castillo, Tomas, Schwarber?

  34. Hey Rich,

I am trying to figure out my last two keeper spots (dynasty league with 10 teams, 40 man rosters, and 30 keepers). I have narrowed my list down to Chris Owings, Carlos Martinez, Jose Berrios, Trevor Bauer, and Eddie Butler. I am rebuilding so I’m primarily concerned with upside and future value. Which two of those guys should I keep?

PS – I have a lot of good young middle infielders (Russell, Baez, Profar, Seager, and Anderson) so I don’t necessarily need to keep Owings, even though he has the most positional value.

    Thanks for the help!

    • I think it’s CMart and…WOW…jeez that’s hard. It’s between Bauer and Butler and I can argue for both. Bauer’s problems are well documented and his quest to be the perfect pitcher might eventually reduce his upside (just throw the ball…) and Butler plays in Coors and had a wonkie shoulder. Berrios, I like but the upside is not like the other two. WOW…tough choice, but if it were me, I would roll the dice and keep Bauer. That said, I don’t feel good about it…

BTW, I know, I hated my answer too, but it’s a tough, tough call.

  35. Trying to plan my keepers for the upcoming season and would welcome your input. 14 team league, 5×5 league where you can keep up to 6. starting 9 hitters (3of and 1 utility) and 8 pitchers (4 starters, 3 relievers and an 8th pitcher)

I am loaded with options and trying to rank them in order:

    Anthony Rendon – 14th round
    Garrett Richards – 21st round
    Victor Martinez – 14th round
    Giancarlo Stanton – 2nd round
    Jose Bautista – 3rd round
    Francisco Liriano – 17th round
    Devin Mesoraco – 13th round
    jake Arrieta – 13th round

Keeping multiple guys in the same round would force them up in rounds and so those 14s and 13s could go up to 11 or 12 depending on the makeup of the full list

    • I would go Stanton and Rendon for sure.

That leave four. Bautista next…that leaves three

Richards upside is still too high and while there is risk, he’s four for me.

Meso for my fifth…even in a one catcher league, the HR potential is too high.

Last guy…VMart is the logical guy…but he’s old and I worry that he’ll hold up and be VMart at the end of the season but I would take him over Liriano and Arrieta.

      Hope that helps.

  36. I need to choose my last slot for a keeper, I have to choose between Jonathan Lucroy, Cargo or Kris Bryant, any suggestions?

    • They all have questions, health with Cargo, Lucroy (1 catcher league, it’s tough to hold him and well, he’s a catcher) and Bryant (tons of promise but 0 AB’s in the majors). That said, I think it’s really hard to throw back Bryant. It’s risky and probably the riskest of the three but the one with the highest upside.

  37. So I’m willing to package Aaron Blair, Tyrell Jenkins, Eddie Butler and Jacob Turner to a rebuilding team for one pitcher upgrade to compete this year. What might be an example of pitcher I could reasonably ask for in return? Can you throw me a couple of specific names s examples?

  38. Rich, I’ve seen the prospect list; I’m curious who you would rather have in 14team h2h dynasty league:
    Sano, Soler, or Gallo.
Both 3B and RF are open positions on my team.

  39. 12 team roto 6×5 (add OPS for batters)

    Been offered
Carlos Gomez, Brandon Moss and Ahmed Rosario for
    Byron Buxton and Wily Peralta

I have good starting pitching and prospects. I feel like I can compete in 2015. I don’t “love” Buxton, so I’m leaning towards the deal. Any final thoughts?

  40. 12 team, 5×5 roto (OPS instead of BA), $325 budget, $4 inflation each season

    C –
    1B – Chris Davis ($18)
    2B – Alcantara ($5)
    SS – Tulowitzki ($38)
    3B – Seager ($13)
    MI –
    CI – Belt ($14)
    OF – Bautista ($21), Gomez ($13), Springer ($9), Puig ($9), Polanco ($9)
    DH – Betts ($5), Pompey ($5)
Minors – Russell, Gallo, Corey Seager, Peraza

    SP – Fernandez ($15), Richards ($5), deGrom ($5), Archer ($11), Hutchison ($5), Salazar ($5), Gausman ($6), Odorizzi ($5), Norris ($5)
RP – Holland ($13), Krod ($13) (if he is closing), Andrew Miller ($5) (if by some chance he is closing)
    Minors – Giolito

Lots of questions with the pitching, the health of Jose/Richards, and rotation spots for Salazar/Norris, and closing jobs for Krod/Miller. I should have about $60 to spend in the auction, and I plan on pretty much ignoring C and MI until after the auction and just using FAAB there (MI should be filled by one of Russell/Seager/Peraza soon enough, and I’m not worried about catchers). In terms of pitchers, should I be looking to add just 1 solid $25 guy and then a closer, or two $12-15 starters and a closer, or consider trading a specific bat? It’s also the type of league where teams that are out of it will trade higher priced non-keepers throughout the season, so there is always an opportunity to pick up a guy or two that way for a good price. I like the upside I have, but there are lots of questions…with the strong offense I’ve built, I don’t want to blow the season due to crappy pitching, but I’m not sure how concerned I should really be.

    Thanks!

    • Nice team…I’m thinking spending considerable money on a top pitcher might be a really good idea. However, will one exist? If not, I would probably look at a couple of cheaper guys but with UPSIDE. We went over many of them on our show last night.

  41. Hey Rich,
Just listened to the podcast about thirdbasemen. There are 3 names I didn’t hear: Carlos Santana, Ryan Zimmerman, and Chris Davis all qualify at 3B in my league (20 game minimum). Where would you take them in a weekly points league? Personally, I like them all better than Wright and Harrison especially with the multi-positional eligibility on a roster that starts 23 each week. Your thoughts? (sorry I don’t twitter)
    Chris

    • Good point…need to do better on the list as the NFBC only list players by their primary position.

For a points league, I would take all three…Davis has a lot more value in that format

  42. Hi Rich,
The above Trout conversation got me thinking a little about proposing a trade. 10 team dynasty league.

    Side A:
    Trout

    Side B:
    Bruce
Sano or Russell (any thoughts here?)
    C. Frazier

Which side do you like best and why?

    Thanks again!

  43. In a dynasty league would you trade Arenado and Bryant for Trout, my other 3B is Machado and my CF is Pederson.

  44. Looking for your take:
    Current keepers:

    G. Cole,
    Segura,
    C. Seager,
    Arenado,
    Bryant,
    Gallo,
    Betts,
    Pederson

I also have Moncada and Russel as prospects.

    6x 6 roto.
I have an opportunity to get Billy Hamilton for a draft pick.

Would you take Hamiltin and replace one of the 8 guys?

I’m thinking I have a ton of prospects. Maybe deal for hamilton and drop Gallo. He seems like the riskiest guy.

    Or is Gallo worth keeping?

    • I don’t know your rules, but Gallo is likely to not be in the majors until 2016 and it could take some time after that before he’s making enough contact to play full-time. If these are all the guys you can keep, then Hamilton goes ahead of him as he’s playing now. Seager is likely up later this year or next.

  45. Thanks for the reply. Would you trade Abreu or Stanton to get Felix? Do you feel this would put me over the top as a strong contender, or should I stand pat with what I’ve got.
    Thanks

    • Ugh…that would put you in a real good position but it’s just too much value to give up for a Top pitcher. Stanton is going #2 off the board this year while Abreu is going around six. Felix is a second round pick. Huge difference. I would want a lot more for Abreu…no way I trade Stanton

  46. I asked you this about a week ago:

Rich, would you trade Gregory Polanco for the 2nd overall pick and 2nd pick in the 2nd Rd in my Dynasty draft? With #2 i could get either Rusney Castillo or Tomas, and with the 2nd rd pick I could potentially get Hunter Harvey/Micah Johnson/Jose Pereza/Schwarber/Alex Jackson or Nova. Thanks!

You said it was tempting but you would probably hang onto Polanco. Would it change your mind if I told you I would be able to keep Daniel Norris or Jorge Alfaro if I made that trade? If so, who would you keep?

    Thanks!

  47. Hey Rich!
Full disclaimer…I never like posting my entire team and then asking folks to comment on it, grade it and tell me if it’s a contender…but I’m about to! So, I’d you don’t like chiming in on these types of posts, I totally get it. If you do, I really appreciate the help! And thank you in advance if you do!

The biggest reason I’m doing this is to find out what areas I’m weakest at, as I feel I have a chance to compete this season. I think I could use more pitching especially a frontline starter.

I have an opportunity to trade Abreu for Felix but I have a case of cold feet. Should I consider??

    • Pretty stupid good team. Starting offense is rediculous. The pitching could use some help though. It just gets light after Scherzer and doesn’t match your offense. I would consider Rodon as my pitching. You might even want to trade a bat for an arm to try and tie up a victory. Overall…really good team!

  48. Hey Rich,

In a keeper league, what would you do with top prospects in general and Byron Buxton and Carlos Correa in particular?

To frame this question, my home league keeps 4. In a “dynasty league” I joined last year we keep 14 (I have Buxton. Do I keep him or trade him before the draft?).
In a “dynasty league” I just joined this year, we keep 10 (the guy who owns Correa wants to deal him for a pick. What would you give up? – top 10 picks are reserved for keepers).

    Jeremy Gibbs

    • Lots of data here…not sure exactuly how to answer…sorry. I’ll say this, Buxton and Correa are two of the three best prospects in the game and both will likely be up in 2016. I would not keep either in a keeper league if I can keep four major leaguers (my best players). If I have a minor league roster, they would both be my top keeper.

  49. Hi Rich,

The recent prospect articles have been great, as always. Thank you for all the brilliant information. A quick question if I may (although the top 25 prospects coming out on Friday may answer this for me)? Which side would you prefer in a dynasty league?

    Addison Russell & Carlos Rodon
    or
    Carlos Correa & Dylan Bundy

    Cheers,
    Hoppy

  50. Hey Rich,

Can you name me some rookies (outside of the top 50 prospects) that have a good shot at landing in a bullpen to start the year? Its a deep points league, so saves/holds not necessary. Just playing time.

    Thanks!
