  1. In a rebuilding phase in a dynasty pts league that started last year. Owner has come to me with an offer of either my Joc or Will Myers for Stroman. My current OF looks like this:
    LF, Joc
    CF Eaton
    RF Myers
    OF4 Souza
    OF5 Alcantara

I have a pithing staff that is growing with Henderson Alvarez, Wily P, CMart, Drew Smyly. Also have Syndergaard, Hunter Harvey, Vincent Velasquez and Manaea on the farm. I’m looking for a potential Ace in the future and feel like Stroman has solid stuff. Knowing his arm is healthy and a Knee Injury would be alright to come back from.

So all in all would you buy him and if so, who would you part ways with out of Joc and Myers?

  2. In a dynasty points league I was offered Jason Vargas, Trevor Cahill, and Francisco Rodriguez for RYU. I know RYU younger but I’m worried about his ongoing shoulder. It’s a points league where we start 18 Pitcher flex so the more active pitchers the merrier. Would you do this 3 for 1 deal?

  3. Oh wise sage….

Before I ask my question, thanks for letting me in the Champions league. I had a blast with that draft last night. Twenty seconds a pick was crazy!

Does Zach McAllister intrigue you at all? He has increased his FB velo 2 mph increased his O and Z swing rates last season, and has always done a good job of keeping the ball in the park even though he is in the low 40’s flyball rate.

I don’t know what CLE is putting in the water but I think we can now say they have a pretty good track record for getting the most out of their SPs.

Are you buying a breakout? 3.60 ERA with 1.18 WHIP?

    Zach McAllister over the following?

    Wei-Yin Chen
    TJ House
    Chase Anderson
    Brandon McCarthy

What say you? I have him in a 14-team and a 20-team dynasty league

    Thanks

    3000mi2PigTown

    • It’s a good call on McAllister. Velo is up and curveball has gotten tighter. I would take them over all of those you have listed.

It’s amazing what good coaching can do.

  4. Hello Rich,
I just want to commend you on the fact that you try to answer every question that comes your way while our questions usually will never get answered from some of those other “big name” sites. It’s really awesome what all you do for the fantasy community and I thank you sir!

Trade Question: 12-Team, Head-to-Head with daily transactions. Our league starts 10 (P) spots and my rotation is solid with Sale and Scherzer anchoring and Betances and Chapman as my closers. This league is big on streaming pitchers throughout the week but 3 of the teams have gone an All-Closers/Setup men staff (we count Saves + Holds). Would you deal Cargo or Ellsbury for C. Carasco? Right now, I have 4 hitters on my bench but they are all guys I don’t really want to be dropping (Pompey, Micah Johnson, M. Semien, R. Zimmerman).

Is this a deal you would normally consider at all? Ideally I would like to only have 2 hitters on my bench and add another SP and quality CL or Setup man. Thoughts?

    Thanks!

    • Thanks for the feedback…our site continues to grow and it’s my goal to always answer all questions.

I can not trade Cargo or Ellsbury for Carrasco. 2 months of great performance is just not enough and you throw in a history of injuries and I just can’t do it.

  5. Hey Rich! I’d love to hear your input on Keone Kela and what you think his role is this year and beyond. I’ve read where some folks think he’ll be the closer by years end?! How high is his ceiling? I picked him up, based on his spring…hoping for a lotto ticket of sorts. Whaddya think?!

    Thanks!!

    • Has the closer profile for sure. Throws really hard but doesn’t get a ton of plane on his pitches. Yeah, anybody with double-digit K’s and can hit the upper nineties has a chance to see saves. Will it happen this year? Doubtful

  6. Hey Rich, really don’t mean to be a pest but I’m really looking forward to your opinion on the current MLB comp to the eventual prime years of: Corey Seager, Addison Russell, & J.P. Crawford…I have seen some stat projections in the various profiles you have posted but no direct comparisons. Thanks for the solid work sir!

    • I really hate doing comps as it’s unfair to all of these guys. Seager and Russell have a chance to be multiple all-stars with Crawford just behind them.

  7. Clint Frazier is ranked just ahead of Nomar Mazara in the top 100. After spring training, would you still rank Frazier ahead? I have Frazier in dynasty league and am curious if I should accept trade to get Mazara. Thoughts?

    • Probably not based on Spring Training but I wasn’t too happy with my ranking of Mazara and think the power alone should have put him higher. I do worry about his swing and miss though, but he’s more athletic than you would think, so hopefully, the swing and miss will not as bad as I first thought. If I were offered Mazara straight up for Frazier, I would do it.

  8. Hello Rich!

Hope you are well! I noticed you do not have Yoel Mecias ranked in your Phillies prospect list. I have seen him listed pretty high on other sites and some seem to think he is bound for a big year going into the Florida State League. Are you particularly down on Yoel? Thanks for all you do!

    • I can’t really comment on what other sites have said. Mecias has a good arm and can touch the mid 90’s. He’s really thin and needs to mature and fill out in order to stay a starter. Plus, he’s already had TJS and I would like to see him fully recovered before thinking about putting him on a Top 10. That said, the Phillies system is not very good, so he could see their system next year.

  9. Hey Rich!

Started listening to your podcast on my daily commute last year and it was the reason I won my league! Thank you!

    Is this a fair trade?

    10-team h2h points keeper league.

    Jacob Degrom
    for
    Joc Pederson

  10. Jimmy Nelson hasn’t looked great this Spring. I know spring stats don’t matter but do you think his skills can transfer to the MLB level?
I have him on my bench in a points league. Would you drop him for any of the following free agents: Greene, Daniel Norris, Graveman, Jake McGee or Souza.

  11. Thoughts on Keone Kela?

  12. Would u be so kind to offer the current MLB comp for the following prospects eventual primes?

    Addison Russell
    Corey Seager
    J.P. Crawford

Those are the 5 prospects I currently hold. I’m playing to punt HR, RBI in a 10man 6X6 H2H…I want to make sure the eventual finished product of those players fit what I’m doing. Thanks!

    • Did you say… punt HR and RBI? Really?

      • Absolutely. ..it’s a dominant strategy. Plays off everyone’s psychological tendency to prefer the long ball…playing this strategy allows for stacking of rotations because the offensive players who focus on the categories I’m not punting (r, h, sb, obp) are cheap relative to what what they provide so you can get them later in the Draft and focus early on pitching… in one of my leagues I have Kershaw, Price, Wainwright, and Hamels as my top 4 pitchers Every year I’ve played this strategy I have finished in the money (top 3 to finish in the money in my leagues)

      • I have indeed punted HR and RBI’s and focused on pitching and speed and won many H2H leagues that way. 5×5 Cat…try to win all pitching cats, SB and hold serve in BA and RUNS and you will make the playoffs and then anything can happen. Nobody will want to face you.

      • Hey rich glad to hear a guru like yourself has tried it!! Any thoughts on my original question? If they don’t fit I’m going to try to move them for more elite arms

  13. Good Afternoon rich

trying to figure out who i should keep, got a somewhat young pitching staff

need to pick 4 pitchers to keep, 8 team league with 14 keepers
bumgarner, kluber, jordan zimmermann , teheran, iwakuma, cobb, gray, and darvish

in a tough spot with darvish…i have to keep the guy i take it?

    thanks pal

  14. Hi Rich, discovered you through the Fantasy Baseball Insider podcast. Like what I’m seeing so far. I’m in 10 team American and 8 team National league only leagues. ($260 – 23)(2 different leagues) I have the first pick ($15) in our supplemental rotation draft. Besides the left overs all players who did not get any major league playing time last year are up for grabs. Any chance you can give me a short list of players I should look at drafting (in both leagues) who will have an impact this year?

I’m thinking Yasmani Thomas or Jung-Ho Kang in the national league and Carlos Rondon in the American League.

Lot’s of rookies have been kept.
AL – Rodruiguez, Micah Johnson, Byrun Buxton, Joey Gallo, Bundy, Henry Owens

NL – Harvey, Seager, Kris Bryant, Picotty, Addison Russel, Archie Bradley, Snydergard, Gray

    Thanks

    Corey

  15. Hey rich

What are your thoughts on rendon? I’m seeing a few things written up on him the past couple days comparing him to chipper jones and tulo.

  16. In my 4X4 Nl only dynastly league (Cap $260) I traded $8 Duda and $5 alex guerrero for $5 yelich. Yelich term ends this year and duda’s next. I am all in this year. I also traded bradley for Giolito. Do you like these deals or do you think I gave up too much for yelich. I could extend Yelich for another year but that would bump him up to $15.

  17. Thanks Rich, great advice. I’m going with Soler. and my team name is Soler Power. ironically I’m an engineer working in the alternative energy space….:) to follow up on the Bryant thing. I neglected to catch that the sox fan picked him up late last year. I think I want to make an offer – Springer (keeping in the 12th) for kris Bryant (free agent pickup so keeper in the 8th). would you do that deal? also keep in mind that now I would keep all free agents so my 8th, 7th, 6th round will be gone. what do you think of Springer this year in general? 40/40 like he did in the minors….:)

    • If Springer does 40/40, he’ll be the number one pick above Trout, because that means he’ll hit enough to get on-base and steal 40 bases. Temper it down to 20/20 with a .240-.250 batting average and that would be his ceiling. Bryant ceiling this year is 25/12 with a .250-.260 batting average, but long-term, he’s a 40/10 guy with a .260-.270 while Springer is likely a 25/20 guy, maybe more with a .240-.250 batting average…both very, very good.

  18. Hey rich, love your podcast. it is by far the best fantasy one out there! Im in a 12 team keeper league with a bunch of cubs and white sox fans. you can keep 3 players drafted 6th round and beyond in the round you drafted them. last year Jose Abreau was drafted in 6th round and is now worth 1st round value…. my question is how high would you draft Kris Bryant this year given that info? you can only keep players for a max of 3 years and I really want him on my team but I don’t want to overdraft based on my Cub affinity….
and another question- I have Jorge Solar and need to decide on my last keeper spot. already keeping springer and kluber. last spot is between Soler (8rd-free agent pickups count as an 8th rd keeper), Dickerson (8th rd), Dozier (8th rd), sonny gray (10th), and ventura (20th)

  19. Hey rich, love your podcast. it is by far the best fantasy one out there! • Soler…easy for me over the other guys. Ventura is interesting at 20 though. Soler could be a star.

Bryant…he has MVP level talent and clearly, nobody knows how to pitch him now. They’ll figure it out and he’ll struggle and the adjustment to adjustment game will start. He has the makeup to push through it, but a 20-25 home runs, .240-.270 batting average feels about right to me. For me, that’s a third or fourth round value, particularly if you can keep him. In your format though, where you can keep 72 players, that makes him a first round pick, doesn’t it? At worse, a second round pick. It’s a risk for sure, but it’s those types of bold moves that wins leagues. In a new league, I would take him in the fourth if the league is a keeper league and a 5th if it’s a flat redraft league.

  20. Hi Rich,

Can Jake Marisnick go 10-12 HR and 20+ SBs this year? If so, isn’t that a deep sleeper? Does his BA bring his value down or his “countables”?

Lastly, is he still a 20/20 guy long-term?

    Thanks!

    • Really good post. We’ve all forgotten about Marisnick. Has speed and power but with some length in his swing. There is something there and he should be taken late in drafts. Good post.

  21. Rich, you mentioned on one of your podcasts a prospect that could be the “this year’s Kenny Giles.” Who was that?

  22. Loving the podcasts leading into the season….If hector Olivera signs this week, is he potentially going to start the season as an every day player? If so what is your guess on his season stats projection?

I could use some steals on my team out of the middle infield spot. Is it worth targeting Odor or Micah Johnson in trades?

    Thx

  23. Would you rather have Wendell Rijo or Roman Quinn? Just considering future upside

  24. How worried should I be about Rendon’s injury at this point?

Our keeper selections are due in a few days, and while we can keep players forever, I do have a few other pretty viable keeper choices (my roster is listed near the top of this page) that I could go with if Rendon is going to end up missing a considerable chunk of time.

  25. Hey Rich,

Thanks for the help. Keeper auction league with $260 budget. We can keep our players forever but if they are kept their price increases by $3 every year. I get to choose 8 MLB players and 1 prospect (buxton or sano) to keep. These prices are adjusted for the 2015 season.

Which 8 players and 1 prospect do you keep? I would only like to keep a max of 3 pitchers.

    Anthony Rendón Was – 2B,3B – $5
    Ian Desmond Was – SS – $30
    Albert Pujols LAA – 1B – $24
    Matt Kemp SD – OF – $24
    Kyle Seager Sea – 3B – $9
    Carlos Santana Cle – C,1B,3B – $22
    Grégory Polanco Pit – OF – $4
    Miguel Sano Min – 3B,SS – $4
    Byron Buxton Min – OF – $15
    Matt Harvey NYM – SP – $10
    Alex Wood Atl – SP,RP – $4
Jeff Samardzija CWS – SP -$4
    Jacob deGrom NYM – SP – $4

  26. i’m not here to ask you anything .
i’m here to tell you something .

when watching spring training games ,
i always keep this site open .
when watching rookies , i do my own
1st-person observations , and then refer to your “scouting reports” / observations
while the games are in progress .

i find this exercise to be valuable .

and i thank you for all of your hard work .

  27. Rich & Tim,

    LOVE THE SHOW!!!

I am set to draft one week from today in a keeper league which only allows you to keep players drafted after the 15th round. I am currently keeping Victor Martinez from the 17th round and Anthony Rendon in the 19th round.

I won the league last year which means I own the 10th pick in the draft. The only player that is currently unavailable in the top 10 is Mike Trout. Everyone else in the top 20 is still on the board. I am currently in the air about which type of draft strategy I should put together for the 10th and 11th picks. What do you guys think and please feel free to throw any input in for the next two rounds. Positions of recommendation would be good, you don’t have to get too crazy with players because I know you guys are extremely busy. Thanks for your time.

    Ken

  28. In 6×6 (Add OPS, HLDS) dynasty, could you rank the following?

    Lindgren
    Padlo
    Rio Ruiz
    Demeritte
    Duane Underwood
    Juan De Leon
    Bret Phillips
    Boldoquin
    Loehr
    Medeiros

    Thanks!

  29. If you could pick two of these for dynasty which ones….

Margot, josh bell, mazara or renfroe

And for shortstop do you like jp crawford or nick gordon.

    Thanks

  30. Which side gets the most pure value? 15 team 5×5 roto (NSB over SB, OBP over AVG, SV+HLDS over SV). Team A already has Bryant at 3B.

Team A Gets : BYRON BUXTON, JOSE BERRIOS, CJ CRON, ALBERT ALMORA
Team B Gets : EVAN LONGORIA

  31. Hey Rich love the site. I can keep 12 players, already picked 9 with Harper, Bryant, Donaldson, Xander, Betts, Freeman, Harvey, Fernandez, Buxton. I have to pick 3 of the following in the round listed. 12 team h2h league with OBP, SLG, K/9, BB/9.

    Julio Urias – 20th
    Dylan Bundy – 25th
    Taijuan Walker – 22nd
    Kolten Wong – 17th
    Kevin Gausman – 17th
    Joey Gallo – 20th
    Garrett Richards – 8th

Which three would you suggest? I have Betts in Yahoo eligible at 2B so I have been leaning towards keeping Richards, Walker and Gallo.

    Thanks!

    • Walker, Richards, and Wong. Oh, I see, you have Betts for 2B (which is bogus btw), Yeah, have fun…keep Gallo. Sometimes, it’s just fun to own certain guys, and he will be one.

  32. Hi Rich,

My keeper deadline is tonight for our 10 team dynasty auction league (standard H2H 5×5, $50 cap). I’m stressed about who to keep between Dozier and Castro. I am contending and have a very good team. Here are my options:

    If we kept Castro…

    Option 1
    2B: Gordon $0.75
    SS: Castro or Bogaerts $1.00
MI: Betts $2.00 (could use Castro or Bogaerts here too)
    Bench/minors: Alcantara (2B/OF) – $1.00

    Or, if we kept Dozier:

    Option 2
    2B: Gordon $0.75
    SS: Bogaerts $1.00
    MI: Dozier $2.50
    Bench/minors: Betts (2B/OF) – $2.00
    Bench/minors: Flores (2B/SS) – $0.50

We are competing and there are some question marks with playing time for Betts. Otherwise, I think this would be an easy decision. But, even if Dozier regresses to 20/15, that’s a good MI.

    Thanks Rich!

  33. How would you rank these in deep dynasty league with MiLB rosters?

    Dansby Swanson-college
    Nick Banks-college
    Michael Chavis
    Reynaldo Lopez
    Bradley Zimmer
    Brandon Drury

  34. Hey Rich,

I’m trying to determine the last keeper in my 10-team dynasty league (30 keepers). I am torn between Chris Owings and Kohl Stewart.

I’m leaning toward Owings because he is already in the Majors and he has a pretty high floor (for a shortstop). The problem is that I have an abundance of young shortstops and he doesn’t seem to have a very high ceiling.

On the other hand, Kohl Stewart would be a first round pick if I don’t keep him. I realize that he brings a lot more risk, but it seems like he also has a much higher ceiling. Pitching prospects are worth a fortune in my league, especially ones that were drafted 4th overall. He clearly has more trade value than Owings in my league.

What should I do?! Thanks for the help!

    • Kohl Stewart is the better player but with 30 keepers, 300 total, he doesn’t make the cut. Owings probably doesn’t either. If pitchers are worth a fortune, then I would keep Stewart. He’s still two years away.

  35. Hey Rich, love the show. Keep up the great work. I had our 12-team H2H points draft this week and loaded the back end of my rotation and bench with some cheap SP. Does Nick Tropeano have a spot in the Angels rotation and would you drop any of the following for him? Hammel, Hahn, Pomeranz, Walker, or Jimmy Nelson. (Fiers, Pineda, and McHugh are also options but I’m assuming these guys are not droppable.)

    • I’m not a huge fan of Trop and believe he’s more of a swing guy. I would not drop him for the guys listed. BTW, some good pitchers there. Pomeranz could finally be putting it together, I saw Walker hit 98 and Nelson should be poised as well. Well done there.

  36. Hey Rich,

    Byron Buxton Min – OF – $15
    Matt Harvey NYM – SP – $10
    Alex Wood Atl – SP,RP – $4
Jeff Samardzija CWS – SP -$4
    Jacob deGrom NYM – SP – $4

  37. Hey Rich,
Are you buying into Buck Showalter’s comment that Hunter Harvey will be contributing in Baltimore at some point in 2015? Is he really that close after just 87 IP in Low A? Are they thinking he will be a starter in the second half?

    Thanks for your time!

  38. Thanks Rich. Along your line of thinking, I’m trying to swap Wood for a hi pick with a guy who likes Wood a lot.

  39. Hey Rich, love the podcast. You and Tim are great together, voting for you out at PodcastAwards.com. Re-building a team that I took over in dynasty. 3OF, 1 Util, no CI or MI, but designated CF spot for one of the 3 OF positions. 6×6 categories (R, RBI, SB, HR, AVG, OBP and K, W, L, Sv, ERA, WHIP).

We re-sign players at their current MLB salary for x number of contract years. Can only re-sign 4 players each year and at least 1 has to be a hitter and 1 has to be a pitcher. So, ideally, you would space out the contract years to be able to re-sign valuable players. Each player starts with 1 year, and each team can allocate contract years to extend the life of those contracts. I have 9 total contract years to distribute, and wanted to see what you thought I should do.

My thought as of now, 1 year on AGon, 2 on Alcides, 2 on Leonys, 1 on Taylor, 1 on Shoemaker, 1 on Tropeano, 1 on Refsnyder. If you end up cutting players while they are under contract, you have to pay at least half of their salary depending on the time of year you cut them.

Players that I can add contract years include:
Adrian Gonzalez (21M) – As an example, I’m thinking of adding 1 contract year to Adrian Gonzalez and would have him through the 2016 season at 21M.
    Alicides Escobar (3M)
    Leonys Martin (4.8M)
    Stephen Vogt (.5M)
    DJ Lemahieu (.5M)
    Yangervis Solarte (.5M)
    Michael Taylor (.5M)
    Brandon Crawford (3.2M)
    Rob Refsnyder (.5M)
    Ryan Rua (.5M)
    Matt Shoemaker (.5M)
    Nick Tropeano (.5M)
    Kevin Quackenbush (.5M)
Also, have Trea Turner and Michael Chavis as minor leaguers w/ 4 year contracts, but could add years to them as well.

    • Sorry Brandon, I’ve struggled with this post since you sent it. Can you restate your question in just a fewer words. Thanks.

      • Hey Rich,
I know it’s a lot to take in. I took over this dynasty team last year and it’s been a learning experience for me. I’ve actually made some trades since I sent you this question. So, it’s a little easier now.

Out of Marcell Ozuna, Rob Refsnyder, and Michael Taylor, I have 6 years of control to distribute. We have a designated CF spot, so I was going to put 3 years on Ozuna and have him signed through 2018. Then, I have 3 years to split between Michael Taylor and Rob Refsnyder. Which player would you give 2 years of control, which gets 1 year.

I can re-sign the player after the contract ends, but have to do so at whatever MLB salary they are currently making. So, in Taylor’s case, he’d be arbitration eligible in 2018 so if I put 1 year on him, I can re-sign him before he hits arbitration.

Hopefully this is a little easier to understand.

      • My reply from 3/23 is still the question, but sub in Ryan Rua for Michael Taylor.

      • Don’t worry about it Rich. It’s a unique league and I’m just going to wing it as best I can. Appreciate the time you probably spent trying to figure out what I was talking about. Appreciate all of your work.

  40. I know you don’t do shallower leagues, but I have a question. It’s a 12-team, points, dynasty league. Points are heavily weighted towards SP. I’m not really competing this year, but should be inching towards competition in ’16. Here’s the trade question I have –

I get DYLAN BUNDY for ROUGNED ODOR.

I already have Giolito, Strasburg, Hoffman, and Urias, but feel that Bundy will help my staff. For 2B, I can find a replacement fairly easily, whether it be of the Waiver Wire or through a trade so that is not a factor. I just would like to know which side you would take.

Also, who of the two has the highest upside?

    Thanks!

    • I try to respond to all questions and don’t consider a 12-team league necessarily shallow. 8-team leagues are a different story and honestly, I’ve never played in that format.

I make that deal as in general points leagues favor pitching and power. I’m still a big fan of Bundy and his upside is far superior than that of Odor. That said, there’s more than a zero chance that Odor has the better career, particularly with Bundy’s TJS still very recent. Still do it.

      • Thanks for the response Rich! Ended up taking Bundy.

I got another trade question. Same league. This one involves me giving up STEPHEN STRASBURG and getting back JAMES SHIELDS, HOMER BAILEY, and GABBY GUERRERO.

Thoughts? I need the pitching depth. Do you think I should be asking for a better prospect though?

      • I would rather have Strassburg

  41. I’ve been in my first fantasy league for what will be the 5th season in 2015. My track record is decidedly mediocre. Never winning, but not the worst. It’s a 12 team, 7×7 cat. Dynasty league with 6 regular keepers and one A keeper (500 MLB career ABs; 150 career innings or less) and one B keeper (1000 career ABs; 300 IP). I plan on keeping Rizzo, Arenado, Yelich, Starling M, Heyward, C Carrasco, A Wood (B) and Danny Santana (A). When I project who I think are likely keepers for the other teams, it seems like there’s better quality SPs than bats, with players like Kemp or Kinsler likely bats on the top of the list, SPs like Grienke, McHugh, and Quintana near the top. I pick 5th and was entertaining a strategy that goes 4 SPs, 1 closer in the first 5 rounds in an attempt to dominate pitching categories. Your thoughts? (Great podcast, and yes, I managed to get past ‘mature’ and vote for 361)

    • I like your keepers through Heyward, but Carrasco and Wood are just ok for me. I’m also NOT a fan of Danny Santana. Huge BABIP induced year with regression coming.

I would like to see you get Grienke if possible, followed by Kemp.

      Good luck…RW

  42. Given that I am currently in full rebuild mode (looking to make a run in 3 years, maybe 2 if guys come up quick) would you trade Porcello for Hunter Harvey straight up? I’ve been debating this in my head for a few days now whether it was worth the risk, figured it may help to get another opinion.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • It’s a reasonable trade and one I would do. There is risk as Harvey was shelfed with a barky forearm in August last year. I’ve heard he’s ok though…Porcello is a solid 3/4 and I believe the ceiling is higher with Harvey. Of course, Porcello has already achieved his ceiling.

  43. Love the podcast!
So I want to take a different angle for fun! I’m trying to create the “perfect dynasty team”. (Fun debate). Would you both debate about who the very top current major leaders for Dynasty purposes would be at each position (include 5 SPers and 3 RPers)? I’d like to then use that as my attempt to make it happen. I’ll let you know how I do! Obviously, young guys entering their prime would be key. In my league, I have Rendon at 2b.

May the games begin! Play fair. I don’t want either of you to get your feelings hurt.

  44. Hey Rich!
Looking to take the prospect w/ the highest upside/lowest risk from…
    Monte Harrison
    Jorge Mateo
    Ozhaino Albies
    Michael Gettys
    Orlando Arcia
    Franklin barreto
    Willy Adames

    Thanks!

  45. Hi Rich,

I feel like this is an interesting question. I’m not sure where to go with it. I play in a 10 team dynasty auction league ($50 salary cap). 30 man roster with a 10 man minor league roster (25 years or younger to be eligible).

I just acquired M. Betts $2.00 who is minor league eligible (does not count against keepers).

I’ve been listening to your podcasts and know the love you have for him. So, with that in mind, is the following crazy?

    Betts $2.00
Kipnis $3.00 (wasn’t going to be a keeper on my team anyway)

    For

Yelich $1.00 (minor league eligible as well)

Again, is this crazy? I guess in the end I save $1.00. If I’m going for it this year does that make a difference? Yelich is probably more sure then, but am I helping out a rival?

    Thoughts?

    Thank you!

    • I understand the logic and love Yelich, but I think the upside with Betts is higher. More speed and a chance to be a better hitter…and that’s saying a lot. Tough call, but I would rather have Betts.

      • Thanks for the quick answer. I do have one more aspect to this and I’d like your take on it. This is purely from a salary/budget management perspective.

Our salary cap is $50 for the auction for the 30 players and then increases to $65 for in-season which includes our minor league roster. All waiver wire adds default to $2.00. So, is saving $1.00 with Yelich over Betts for this year that big of a deal? I don’t want to get stuck not being able to add players because we’re over budget. Again, any thoughts with that in mind? Thanks again.

  46. 10-team NL only Roto. We keep 10 guys. I need help deciding on my 10th. Here are my options:

    Matt Kemp $28
    Alex Guerrero $5
    Darin Ruf $2

Also can keep three minor leaguers (never been called up). Here are my options:
    Julio Urias $2
    Josh Bell $5
    Braden Shipley $5
    Matt Wisler $5

    Which do you leave out?

    • Kemp is expensive but there doesn’t appear to be a lot of opportunity for AG at the moment. I would go Kemp, but don’t really like either options.

      Urias – easy

  47. Hi Rich,

Is Danny Salazar undervalued? 9.82 K/9, 2.86 B/9, 3.54 FIP. I know you had talked about some of the undervalued guys in your podcast when you filtered some of the data. I didn’t recall you talking about him…maybe because he only threw 110 innings last year. What are your thoughts on him?

Thanks for the great work. Just recently I’ve started listening to your Podcasts and I love them. Can’t wait for our dynasty league auction to get here. We won last year and have a great shot at repeating.

    • Salazar did indeed make the list. Perhaps we forgot to mention. I don’t know if the table below will display, but here you go. I don’t like the size but the arm and arsenal are strong. He’s on my target list as are others on this list, particularly Clay B.

Player Player’s Name IP K/9 BB/9 ERA zERA
      Buchholz Clay Buchholz 170.3 7.00 2.90 5.34 -1.35
      McCarthy Brandon McCarthy 200.0 7.90 1.50 4.05 -0.95
      Miley Wade Miley 201.3 8.20 3.40 4.34 -0.76
      Minor Mike Minor 145.3 7.40 2.70 4.77 -0.75
      Hutchison Drew Hutchison 184.7 9.00 2.90 4.48 -0.65
      Salazar Danny Salazar 110.0 9.80 2.90 4.25 -0.63
      Iwakuma Hisashi Iwakuma 179.0 7.70 1.10 3.52 -0.53
      Cole Gerrit Cole 138.0 9.00 2.60 3.65 -0.49
      Stroman Marcus Stroman 130.7 7.60 1.90 3.65 -0.45
      Santana Ervin Santana 196.0 8.20 2.90 3.95 -0.38
      Bailey Homer Bailey 145.7 7.70 2.80 3.71 -0.26
      Canderson Chase CAnderson 114.3 8.30 3.10 4.01 -0.21

  48. In a dynasty, out of these, which would you drop? Looking for most upside therefore I’d drop whichever has the lowest ceiling.

SP Domingo German, MIA. Age: 22
OF Eddie Rosario, MIN. Age: 22
C Tyler Marlette, SEA. Age: 21
SS Jacoby Jones, PIT. Age: 22

  49. Hi Rich,

My league is a 12 teamer, we must keep 10, and we can keep players forever.
7×7 roto (standard 5×5 cats plus OPS and K’s for hitters, Holds and QS for pitchers). LF/CF/RF instead of OF spots, and 2 Util spots. 9 P spots.

These are my 10 keepers as of right now. I won last year and our draft is a non-snake, so I’ll pick last in every round.

    C –
    1B – Abreu
    2B – Betts
    SS –
    3B – Rendon
    LF – Upton
    CF – Ellsbury
    RF – Braun
    UT – Soler
    UT – Pederson
    Bench – Bryant

    P – Kershaw

I’m not planning on keeping Reyes, Hamels, Wainwright, Arrieta, or Carrasco. I feel like there are just as many questions about those guys are there are for everyone I’m keeping (except for Kershaw of course). But I’m a bit concerned that I’ve just talked myself into that conclusion because I’ve got visions of having Bryant/Soler/Pederson/Betts on my roster for the next decade and all the championships they will help bring me. I’ve had Kershaw on my roster since his debut and I never get tired of seeing his name on my team page….

So am I seeing things accurately, or do you think I’ve let my judgment become too clouded by those visions of future glory?

    Thanks in advance.

    • This is a great question. Can it hold until Friday’s podcast? Would like to get Tim’s thoughts. It’s tough to give up all that pitching but it’s too alluring to give up those bats. It’s a risky strategy but since pitching always comes into the league before bats, I would tend to agree with your thinking. Just know…out of Betts, Soler, Pederson, Bryant…only one or two of those guys will live up to their billings of an all-star, one guy will be a solid player, and one might under performing. They are all studs, so the risk doesn’t seem very high, but stuff usually happens.

      • I’ve got a couple more weeks until the final keeper deadline, so yeah, it can definitely hold for a few more days. I’m always looking forward to the show, this time I’ll just be looking forward a bit extra.

I’ve got another question which gets into game theory a bit.

I’ve been trying to package Ellsbury or Braun with any 2 of those 5 guys I’m cutting loose to get a premium talent like McCutchen, Stanton, or Gomez. It seems like a obvious plan to use assets that I’m going to lose in a couple weeks anyway, but now I’m wondering if that’s actually the right strategy.

By letting all of those guys back into the draft, I would most likely be spreading that talent among multiple teams, and potentially increasing my chances of seeing Carrasco or Arrieta there with my first round pick. If I make a big trade, then my chances of redrafting either of those two shrink considerably, and one other team gets the huge influx of talent, potentially making that team a bigger threat to take away my crown.

        Thanks again.

  50. Use my # 1 waiver wire on Brandon Belt? Someone just dropped him and I need another infielder. My other options are Morse or Castelanos who are on waivers.

Who would you drop (Duffy or Syndagaard?)

    Thanks Rich
